Reverse description A uniformed military figure stands in the central field hoisting a waving flag bearing the Barbadian trident emblem against a backdrop of the United Nations Secretariat building rendered in high relief. To the lower right, the large stylised numeral 50 dominates, incorporating the UN emblem — a world map within a wreath — as part of its design, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. The date range 1945-1995 arcs along the right border, the legend NATIONS UNITED FOR PEACE curves along the upper periphery, and the denomination 5 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower border.

Additional information

The United Nations marked its 50th anniversary in 1995 with an extraordinary volume of commemorative coinage issued by member states worldwide — Barbados among them. Most were struck by the Royal Canadian Mint or the British Royal Mint on contract, and the finished products varied little in ambition from one issuing nation to the next. The proof finish here is standard for the anniversary program.

Barbados joined the UN in 1966, the same year it gained independence from Britain.
