| Obverse description | A detailed high-relief rendering of the Colosseum occupies the upper two-thirds of the field, depicted in a dramatic three-quarter perspective with fine architectural detail across its multiple arcaded tiers. In the lower portion of the field, the laureate effigy of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, rendered in smaller scale as the authorizing portrait. The legend ROMAN EMPIRE arcs along the upper rim, while a decorative star motif with scattered letter fragments appears in the upper field above the Colosseum. The inscriptions ELIZABETH II, COOK ISLANDS, and 5 DOLLARS are distributed around the lower periphery of the field. The antiqued finish lends the entire composition a worn, ancient appearance consistent with the Roman Empire series theme. |
