| Reverse description | A highly detailed relief depiction of the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, rendered after the celebrated chryselephantine masterwork attributed to the sculptor Pheidias. The enthroned figure of Zeus, draped in robes and bearing a sceptre in his left hand, is shown seated upon an elaborately decorated throne with carved panels and columnar supports. A small winged Nike figure is visible to the right of the composition, consistent with ancient descriptions of the original statue. The curved legend 'THE STATUE OF ZEUS AT OLYMPIA' arcs along the left portion of the field, and the engraver's initials appear in the lower right exergue. |
