| Additional information |
The Royal Fortune was the flagship vessel of Bartholomew Roberts — "Black Bart" — the most prolific pirate of the Golden Age, by ships taken. Roberts captured over 400 vessels between 1719 and 1722, an extraordinary tally that dwarfed contemporaries like Blackbeard. He died in combat off the coast of Gabon in February 1722 when HMS Swallow caught his crew largely drunk and unprepared, ending the most destructive single pirating career on record.
The Perth Mint's privateer-themed bullion series draws on genuine Admiralty records and trial documents from the subsequent mass trial at Cape Coast Castle, where 52 of Roberts' men were hanged.
