| Obverse description | Crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the engraver's initials IRB incuse below the truncation. The denomination FIVE DOLLARS appears in the lower field, beneath which is a depiction of the traditional Tokelauan national emblem — a decorative woven basket (kato ulas) on a ribbon inscribed TOKELAU MO TE ATUA. The surrounding border features an intricate geometric pattern inspired by traditional Tokelauan weaving motifs. The legend reads ELIZABETH II ~ TOKELAU 2012 ~ arranged along the upper periphery. |

| Additional information |
Tokelau — three atolls with no airstrip, no harbor capable of receiving large vessels, and a total land area under 12 square kilometers — has no indigenous coinage tradition whatsoever. Its collector issues are administered through New Zealand, which has managed Tokelau's external affairs since 1926. The red-tailed tropicbird nests on all three atolls and is among the few species that genuinely belongs to this territory rather than being chosen for generic Pacific appeal.
