Reverse description Left-facing bust of Arethusa, the freshwater nymph of Greek mythology, depicted in high sculptural relief inspired by the renowned Syracusan dekadrachms of antiquity. Her elaborately braided and pinned hair is adorned with a beaded headband and a large ornamental hairpiece, and she wears a delicate pendant earring and a fine pearl necklace. Two dolphins flank her effigy — one to the upper left and one to the lower right — swimming freely in the field, in faithful homage to the classical iconographic tradition. The mintmark initials CI appear in the lower left field.
