Additional information

Niue has functioned since the 1990s as a licensing vehicle for the New Zealand Mint, issuing legal tender coins that will never circulate and exist solely as collectibles sold to foreign buyers. This owl piece, with its embedded Swarovski crystal, sits in a long line of such products — the face value is nominal, the real price point is multiples higher, and Niue itself sees a royalty arrangement rather than any meaningful monetary function.
