Operation Market Garden, launched in September 1944, was Field Marshal Montgomery's plan to seize a series of bridges across the Netherlands and outflank the Siegfried Line — an ambition that collapsed at Arnhem when the 1st British Airborne Division found itself dropped too far from the bridge and facing two SS Panzer divisions that Allied intelligence had deliberately downplayed. Nearly 8,000 British and Polish troops were killed, wounded, or captured in nine days. Niue has issued gold in this format under licensing arrangements that make these pieces collector-driven from inception, with no meaningful circulation history whatsoever.
