Additional information

This issue commemorates the April 2014 meeting between Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI at the Vatican — the first time in modern history that a reigning pope and a living former pope met in such a formally documented encounter. Benedict's resignation in February 2013 had itself been unprecedented; no pope had abdicated since Gregory XII in 1415.

Cook Islands has issued commemorative silver under licensing arrangements for decades, with the actual striking typically contracted to the Pobjoy Mint or similar European facilities rather than any domestic mint.
