Additional information

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — was commissioned by Artemisia II as a tomb for her husband Maussollos, the satrap of Caria, following his death in 353 BC. The structure was so architecturally singular that it gave the English language the word "mausoleum." It survived largely intact until the 13th century, when earthquakes brought it down; the Knights of St. John subsequently quarried its stone for fortifications at Bodrum.

The Solomon Islands has issued numerous small-format gold pieces under similar Seven Wonders themes, struck to a fineness well below 24-karat — making them more novelty bullion than investment-grade gold.
