Issued to mark the opening of Fiji's new government complex in Suva, this piece was struck under a commemorative program the Reserve Bank maintained through much of the 1980s and 1990s, often contracting production to overseas mints. The .500 fine silver specification was a deliberate cost-reduction measure common to Pacific island commemoratives of the period — fine silver was considered unnecessary for coins unlikely to see meaningful secondary market pressure at the time of issue.
