Reverse description Dramatic high-relief depiction of Hercules battling the Lernaean Hydra, the multi-headed serpentine beast of Greek mythology. The muscular, bearded figure of Hercules is shown at centre, clad in a lion-skin headdress and wielding a club, surrounded by the coiling scaly bodies and multiple snarling heads of the Hydra. Several of the Hydra's heads are highlighted with selective gold gilding, contrasting vividly against the antique silver finish of the coin. The scene is rendered in exceptional sculptural relief with fine textural detail on the serpent's scales and the rocky, marshy ground below. The inscription LERNAEAN HYDRA arcs along the upper periphery of the field in bold lettering.
