| Reverse description | Central design depicts three children paddling a traditional outrigger canoe across stylised waves, occupying the majority of the field. The UNICEF emblem — a stylised child figure within a laurel wreath — appears above the canoe in the upper field, while a second international emblem is placed below in the lower field. The circular legend · FIVE DOLLARS · arcs across the upper rim, and INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE CHILD follows the lower rim, all separated by raised dot stops. |

| Additional information |
The International Year of the Child was declared by the United Nations in 1979, and many Commonwealth nations issued commemorative silver pieces well after the fact — Solomon Islands among them. A four-year lag between the event and this coin's issue date is worth noting, as it reflects the islands' newly independent mint program finding its footing; independence from Britain had only come in 1978.
