| Additional information |
Tuvalu has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1970s, but this oversized kilo-class piece targets the collectible military history market specifically. The subject — the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 — was photographed by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press and became arguably the most reproduced photograph of the Second World War. What is less commonly noted: the famous image captured a second flag-raising that day, staged for photographers after a smaller flag had already been planted hours earlier.
