Struck for the Quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landfall, which the Bahamian government promoted heavily as a national milestone — the islands sit at the probable site of first contact, with San Salvador the leading candidate among historians. The .500 fine gold specification is notably low for a commemorative of this type; the Bahamas had used the same half-fine standard on earlier small-denomination gold issues going back to the 1970s, keeping bullion costs down while maintaining a nominal gold composition.
