Reverse description The reverse reproduces the original Canadian coat of arms design as it appeared on the 1912 Five Dollar gold coin, engraved by Cosme Saffioti. The quartered shield bears the arms of England (three passant guardant lions), Scotland (a rampant lion within a double tressure), Ireland (a harp), and France (three fleurs-de-lis), with an additional base quarter depicting three maple leaves on a single stem. The shield is flanked on both sides by elaborate sprays of maple leaves and branches rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. The legend CANADA arcs above the design, while FIVE DOLLARS curves along the lower periphery, and the commemorative date range 1912-2002 appears below the shield.
