Obverse description Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left periphery, with NIUE ISLAND along the right, and the date 2013 positioned at the top between two decorative dots. The denomination 5 DOLLARS appears below the portrait in the lower field. The portrait follows the Ian Rank-Broadley style with fine sculptural detail in the Queen's features, neck, and crown.

Additional information

This is a privately designed bullion-collector piece issued under Niue's licensing arrangement with the New Zealand Mint, which has produced dozens of themed silver releases under Niue's authority since the early 2000s — a revenue arrangement that has nothing to do with Niuean monetary history and everything to do with the global commemorative coin market. The "1889" in the title references Van Gogh's sunflower paintings, not a date of issue.

KM#979 is one of several numismatically thin issues where the catalog entry carries more weight than the coin's historical significance warrants.
