Reverse description A highly detailed, deeply struck depiction of a Chinese imperial dragon rendered in the traditional East Asian style, its sinuous scaled body coiling across the entire field amid stylised clouds and flames. The dragon faces left with an open, snarling maw as it reaches toward a spherical pearl or bead in the lower centre of the field, upon which the Chinese character 龍 (dragon) is inscribed in relief. The engraver's initials IJ appear in the field. The antique finish gives the high-relief design a dramatic, sculptural quality.
