Additional information

John XXIII was canonized on April 27, 2014, alongside John Paul II — the first time in modern Catholic history two popes were simultaneously elevated to sainthood. The ceremony, presided over by Francis with Benedict XVI present, drew an estimated 800,000 people to St. Peter's Square. Cook Islands issued commemoratives prolifically throughout the 2010s through licensing arrangements with the Pobjoy Mint and others, producing issues that circulated almost exclusively within the collector market.

John XXIII died in 1963, fifty-one years before his canonization — an unusually long interval, partly due to the required miracle verifications.
