The Brenham pallasite was first documented in 1882 near Haviland, Kansas, where farmers had been turning up iron masses in their fields for years without understanding what they were. Pallasites — stony-iron meteorites whose olivine crystals are suspended in a nickel-iron matrix — are among the rarest meteorite classifications, comprising less than one percent of all known falls. A major excavation in 2005 by meteorite hunter Steve Arnold recovered a single specimen exceeding 650 kilograms, reigniting scientific and collector interest in the strewn field.
Cook Islands began embedding authenticated meteorite fragments into commemorative silver coins around this period, capitalizing on that renewed attention.
