Obverse description The crowned coat of arms of Niue occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield with four stars of the Southern Cross at upper left, three sailing ships in pale, a lion passant at upper right, a shell with wheat sheaf at lower left, and crossed hammer and pick at lower right. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown and flanked on either side by fern fronds. The legend NIUE arcs along the upper left border and the date 1987 arcs along the upper right border.
