| Additional information |
The Guadalcanal campaign, fought from August 1942 to February 1943, was the first major Allied offensive in the Pacific and cost the United States Navy more ships than any other single campaign of the war. The Solomon Islands themselves were the literal ground — and surrounding waters — of that fighting, making this commemorative issue one of the few cases where a coin's issuing nation has genuine geographic claim to the event being memorialized rather than simply licensing the subject.
Struck by the Royal Mint, this is among the earliest silver commemoratives issued under the young Solomon Islands state, which had gained independence only in 1978.
