Australia declared war on Germany in September 1939 hours after Britain's own declaration — without waiting for a separate parliamentary vote, as the Curtin government later insisted was necessary. By 1945, over 500,000 Australians had served overseas. The commemorative program marking the 75th anniversary of the war's end was complicated by COVID-19 restrictions that cancelled most planned public ceremonies in 2020, making this coin one of the few official commemorative objects actually issued in the year of the anniversary.
The Royal Australian Mint struck this as part of a broader 2020 release schedule that included both base-metal and silver versions, with the .999 fine silver one-ounce pieces primarily sold directly to collectors rather than through retail channels.
