Obverse description Fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, as modelled by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend encircling the field reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA, with the denomination 5 DOLLARS, fineness 9999 GOLD, weight 1/20 OZ, and date 2013 also inscribed. The designer's initials IRB appear below the portrait truncation.

Reverse description A finely detailed coiled snake is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, its head raised alertly above its tightly wound body, set against a background of stylised bamboo stalks to the right. The Chinese character 蛇 (Snake) appears to the upper left in traditional script, with the Perth Mint privy mark 'P' below it to the left. The legend YEAR OF THE SNAKE is inscribed along the lower rim in a curved Latin script, completing the design of this Australian Lunar Series II issue.
