Additional information

The 1882 Ashes series began after a mock obituary in the Sporting Life declared that English cricket had died following Australia's first victory on English soil, with the "ashes of English cricket" to be taken to Australia. The name stuck, and the urn — never actually presented as a trophy — has remained at Lord's ever since, regardless of which side wins.

Australia held the Ashes at the time of this issue, having reclaimed them in 2006–07 with a 5–0 series whitewash.
