Part of a twelve-coin series issued across 1998–2000 to mark the Sydney Olympics, this piece is notable for its use of pad printing — a technique borrowed from industrial product marking that allowed full-color enamel-style imagery to be applied directly to the coin surface. The Perth Mint was among the earliest sovereign mints to deploy pad printing commercially on a bullion-weight silver coin, and the process required a separate production run after striking.
