Australia's platinum koala series, launched in 1987, was among the first government-backed platinum bullion programs in the world, competing directly with the Soviet Palladium and the Isle of Man's platinum Noble for investor attention. The 1/20 oz denomination — the smallest in the koala bullion range — was issued primarily for fractional buyers and gift packaging rather than serious bullion stacking, which explains why survivorship in original capsules runs unusually high relative to the larger denominations.
