The Perth Mint's red kangaroo bullion series occupies an unusual position in the Australian gold market: unlike the original Australian Nugget coins issued from 1986, which carried fixed designs, Perth shifted to annual design rotation in 1990 specifically to drive collector demand alongside bullion value. The 1/25 oz denomination was introduced to create the lowest accessible entry point in the fractional range, targeting gift and retail markets rather than institutional bullion buyers.
KM# 764 covers the two-year span of Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth effigy on Perth issues — a portrait adopted by Australia in 1999.
