| Reverse description | A red kangaroo in a crouching, forward-leaning posture faces left, rendered in high relief against a satin field, standing on a rocky ground line. To the right of the kangaroo stands a stylised grass tree (Xanthorrhoea), its distinctive spiky crown rising prominently. The series title THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET arcs along the upper legend, while the lower legend bears the date, fineness, and weight denomination: 2005 1/20 OZ. 9999 GOLD. A fine beaded border frames the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Australia's shift to .9999 fine gold in its bullion series — rather than the .9990 standard common to most sovereign mints at the time — was a deliberate marketing decision by the Perth Mint to position itself against the Canadian Maple Leaf, then the benchmark for high-purity gold coin production. The fractional denominations in this series were designed primarily for the Asian gift and investment market, where small-denomination gold pieces historically move in volume the larger formats cannot reach.
