Reverse description Two kangaroos standing in profile are depicted centrally over a raised relief outline map of Australia, rendered in fine detail against a polished field. The upper legend reads THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1/20 OZ. 9999 GOLD, encircling the design along the upper periphery with a beaded border. The date 2001 appears in the lower exergual area flanked by raised dots, with the Perth Mint privy mark P visible below the map design.

Additional information

Australia's gold kangaroo bullion program launched in 1986 as the "Nugget" series before rebranding around the kangaroo design in 1989 — a deliberate pivot away from competing directly with the Krugerrand on historical grounds and toward a more distinctly Australian identity. The Perth Mint, technically a Western Australian government enterprise rather than a federal institution, operates independently of the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and has always handled the bullion program on its own terms.

The 1/20 oz denomination occupies a narrow commercial niche, produced primarily for collectors and gift-market buyers rather than serious bullion stackers. Premiums on fractional gold consistently outpace the metal content.
