Additional information

The Discover Australia series, launched by the Perth Mint in the mid-2000s, was built around the 1/10oz and fractional gold format as an explicitly collectible program rather than a bullion play — annual themed releases with low mintage caps designed to pull repeat buyers. The Whale Shark issue sits in that second wave of the program, by which point the Mint had refined its frosted cameo finish on these small flans to a standard its earlier releases hadn't matched.

Perth capped most Discover Australia gold pieces at 7,500 worldwide. At 1.244g, the coin is closer to a 1/25oz than a clean fractional weight — a deliberate choice to hit a lower retail price point without the "1/10oz" label.
