Additional information

The bilby became a focus of Australian conservation efforts in the 1980s after the species had been eliminated from roughly 80% of its former range by introduced foxes and rabbits. The Royal Australian Mint has periodically used threatened native fauna on bullion issues partly to leverage that public awareness — the bilby in particular benefits from an unusually high profile for a marsupial, owing to an ongoing campaign to replace the Easter Bunny in Australian popular culture with the species.

Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced in 1998, first appeared on Australian coinage that year.
