| Reverse description | The reverse features a dual cartographic composition set against a mirror-polished proof field. A large filled map of the Northern Territory occupies the left portion, its surface covered with the repeated inscription NORTHERN TERRITORY rendered in progressively scaled lettering to create a typographic texture. To the right, an outline map of the full Australian continent is depicted, with the Northern Territory highlighted by a demarcating border. The denomination 5 DOLLARS appears in the lower left field, while the commemorative legend 30 YEARS OF TERRITORY GOVERNMENT curves along the right and lower rim. |

The Northern Territory achieved self-government on 1 July 1978, three decades before this issue — a political arrangement that stopped well short of full statehood, a distinction that remains unresolved to this day. Canberra retained control over uranium mining policy and land rights legislation for years afterward, making the "self-government" designation a matter of ongoing constitutional debate rather than clean administrative separation.
