Part of Perth Mint's early 1990s push into the fractional gold bullion market, this issue belongs to a kangaroo/wallaby series that had already gone through a contentious redesign cycle — the original 1986 Nugget series featured gold nuggets, but the mint shifted to marsupial reverses in 1989 after market research suggested animal designs moved better internationally. The whiptail wallaby reverse appeared only across the 1993–1994 window before the design rotated again, a deliberate annual-change policy Perth adopted to discourage melting and sustain collector premiums alongside bullion demand.
