Additional information

The 1994 issue commemorates the centenary of women's suffrage in South Australia, which in 1894 became the first place in the world to grant women both the right to vote and the right to stand for parliament — a distinction that separated it from New Zealand, which had enfranchised women a year earlier but denied them the right to stand as candidates. The Royal Australian Mint struck this proof in aluminium bronze rather than silver, an unusual choice for a commemorative of this significance.
