The Sydney 2000 Olympic series ran to dozens of individual releases, and the Royal Australian Mint's use of pad printing on these silver proofs was genuinely novel for the time — a process borrowed from industrial ceramics and watchmaking that allowed full-colour imagery to be applied directly to the coin surface without enamel or inlay. The technique attracted as much collector interest in the production method as in the Games themselves.
