Issued across two years following Bradman's 88th birthday in 1996, this coin arrived while its subject was still alive — an unusual circumstance for a commemorative of this scale in Australian coinage. The Royal Australian Mint rarely produced circulating bimetallic five-dollar pieces, and the format was chosen partly to discourage hoarding of the earlier aluminium bronze singles that had plagued earlier commemorative runs.
