Issued to mark the Sydney 2000 Olympics, this piece is one of a large series of sport-themed commemoratives released by the Royal Australian Mint across 1999 and 2000. The sailing events were held at Rushcutters Bay — later renamed the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith handled the flatwater events, while offshore racing ran out of Sydney Harbour. Australia's strong tradition in Olympic sailing, including gold medals at multiple Games, gave the discipline particular domestic resonance at the time of issue.
