The Perth Mint's platinum koala series launched in 1988 as one of the earliest bullion programs globally to use platinum as its primary metal, competing directly with the Canadian Maple Leaf and Isle of Man Noble for institutional and collector buyers. The fractional tenth-ounce denomination served investors unwilling to commit to the full-ounce price point during a period when platinum regularly traded above gold.
Ian Rank-Broadley's third effigy of Elizabeth II, introduced in 1998, actually postdates this issue — the portrait here is Raphael Maklouf's second effigy, used on Australian coinage from 1985 through 1997.
