Additional information

Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1988, positioning the Perth Mint in direct competition with the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle bullion programs that had dominated the platinum investment market through the mid-1980s. The 1/20 oz denomination was the smallest in the four-coin koala bullion set, intended to lower the entry price for retail investors at a time when platinum was trading at a premium to gold.

The 3rd portrait of Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf, was used across Australian coinage from 1985 until its replacement in 1998.
