Fiji's 2002 gold issues were produced in the wake of the May 2000 coup, during which George Speight and armed supporters held Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry hostage for 56 days. The Reserve Bank continued issuing collector-oriented gold pieces through the political instability — partly as a foreign exchange mechanism, partly to maintain institutional normalcy. This piece is 1/20 oz fine gold, a size format popularized in the 1990s for affordable bullion-adjacent collector issues across Pacific Commonwealth nations.
