Poland's centenary of independence — November 11, 1918, when the state reconstituted itself after 123 years of partition between Russia, Prussia, and Austria — generated an enormous wave of commemorative issues from mints worldwide in 2018. Niue, a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand, has for decades licensed its sovereign status to the bullion and collector coin market; the $5 denomination at this weight is a straightforward 2 troy ounce vehicle for that arrangement.
The 123-year partition ended not through a single treaty but through the simultaneous collapse of all three partitioning empires within weeks of each other in autumn 1918.
