Obverse description The quartered arms of Niue occupy the central field, surmounted by the St. Edward's Crown, with two fern fronds flanking the shield as supporters. The quarterly shield displays four stars of the Southern Cross in the first quarter, three sailing ships in the second and fourth quarters, a coconut palm and taro plant in the third quarter, and crossed hammer and native club in the fourth quarter. The legend NIUE arcs along the upper left periphery and the date 1991 along the upper right, both in raised Latin characters.

Additional information

Niue's early 1990s commemorative program was essentially a licensing operation — the island nation collected fees for attaching its name to coins designed, minted, and distributed entirely by outside contractors, primarily for the collector market. This basketball centennial issue appeared a year late by most historical reckonings, as the sport's invention by James Naismith is conventionally dated to December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

KM#144 is one of dozens of Niue-issued sports commemoratives from this period with no meaningful connection to the issuing territory.
