| Obverse description | The Liberian coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a three-masted sailing ship at sea with a rising sun and a palm tree on the shoreline, flanked by a crossed plow and shovel in the exergue, all within a shield surmounted by a ribbon scroll bearing the national motto. The date 1997 is divided to either side of the shield, with the denomination 5 DOLLARS inscribed along the lower rim. The circumferential legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA runs along the upper periphery, with a secondary legend on the shield's lower ribbon reading REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. A beaded inner border frames the entire design. |
