| Obverse description | The complete arms of the Republic of Liberia occupy the central field, depicting a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, a dove in flight, a rising sun, and a plough in the foreground, all enclosed within a decorative shield surmounted by a ribbon bearing the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The date 2003 is split to either side of the shield, with '20' at left and '03' at right. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper rim, and a second inscription REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA appears on a scroll below the shield near the lower rim. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

| Additional information |
The ECU (European Currency Unit) was a basket currency used by the European Community from 1979 until it was superseded by the euro in 1999 — making a 2003 Liberian issue commemorating it a curious anachronism, struck four years after the unit ceased to exist. Liberia has no historical or economic connection to the ECU whatsoever. These pieces were produced squarely for the collector market, manufactured to a price point rather than a standard, with gold plating over base metal dressed up as a tribute coin.
