The Dominion of Canada 5 Dollar notes of 1912 were issued under the authority of the Finance Department, not a central bank — Canada wouldn't establish the Bank of Canada until 1935. The multiple signature combinations reflect successive Deputy Ministers of Finance and Finance Ministers cycling through office during a period of rapid administrative turnover, making signature attribution essential to precise dating within the series.
The variant without "FIVE" and guilloche under the blue seal is the scarcer of the Hyndmann-Saunders pairings and is often the one misidentified in general collections. ABNC's Ottawa facility, established specifically for Canadian government work, handled the full production run.
