Nauru's 2009 gold miniature issues were produced during a period when the island nation was still clawing back from near-total economic collapse — the phosphate deposits that had once made Nauru briefly one of the wealthiest countries per capita on earth were effectively exhausted by the early 2000s, leaving the government dependent on foreign aid and unconventional revenue streams. Collector coinage was one of them.
At 0.5 grams, these pieces contain so little gold that their numismatic markup dwarfs any melt consideration entirely.
