| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Kiribati occupies the central field, depicting a heraldic shield charged with a rising sun over stylised ocean waves in the lower portion and a frigate bird in flight across the upper portion. Beneath the shield, a curved scroll ribbon bears the national motto in Gilbertese script. The country name KIRIBATI and the date 1999 appear as a bold legend in the lower field, while the motto text TE MAURI TE RAOI AO TE TABOMOA is inscribed on the scroll. |

| Additional information |
The *Coquille* was a French naval corvette that circumnavigated the globe between 1822 and 1825 under Louis Isidore Duperrey — the first circumnavigation commanded by a French officer trained primarily as a hydrographer rather than a combat sailor. The expedition charted extensive stretches of the Pacific, including portions of the Gilbert Islands, the archipelago that would become Kiribati after independence in 1979. Kiribati has regularly commemorated Pacific exploration history in its silver program, producing small-mintage issues for the collector market throughout the 1990s.
