The Marshall Islands exploited a 1984 U.S. Compact of Free Association provision allowing it to issue legal tender coinage, which opened the door to a flood of collector-targeted commemoratives throughout the 1990s. This Thunderbird piece belongs to a broader Classic Cars series produced during that decade — coins never intended to circulate and largely sold direct to collectors through mail-order channels. The 1955 Thunderbird itself was Ford's two-seat answer to the Corvette, with first-year production capped at 16,155 units.
