The Marshall Islands exploited a 1988 act of Congress permitting the newly self-governing republic to issue legal tender coinage, producing a flood of commemorative dollars throughout the 1990s aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. This Ford Quadricycle issue is one of dozens from that period. The Quadricycle itself — Ford's first self-propelled vehicle, built in a Detroit brick shed in June 1896 — predates the Ford Motor Company by seven years.
